Penguin publishers announces that a paperback version of Salman Rushdie's controversial novel The Satanic Verses will go ahead as planned.

Muslims have condemned the book as blasphemous and condemn Penguin as only being interested in money.

Rushdie's literary agent says:

"At no stage have they said they will not go ahead in paperback. Any other interpretation put on that is wrong."

Liaqat Hussein, the general secretary of the council of mosques in Bradford, says:

"We believe the publisher and author are acting out of greed. They are trying to maximize their profits at the expense of Muslim feelings."
