Jordan announces that it will return to full diplomatic relations with Egypt. Seventeen Arab nations broke off diplomatic relations with Egypt in 1979 when Egypt signed a separate peace treaty with Israel.

Butros Ghali, Egypt's Minister for Foreign Affairs, hails the decision as a positive step towards real Arab solidarity: "We hope this step will achieve the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people."

Syria and Libya, in contrast, condemn the move and threaten to break off relations with Lebanon as well.
