Canada's Justice Minister Guy Favreau says that being an atheist should not in any way be a barrier to becoming a Canadian citizen.

Favreau is responding to questions from Dr. William Howe, the Member of Parliament for Hamilton South, regarding the case of Ernest and Cornelia Bergsma, two immigrants from the Netherlands who were denied citizenship earlier this year because their atheism meant they weren't of "good character."

The case has sparked outrage across Canada, and among the largest churches, only the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada defends the idea of refusing citizenship to atheists.
