The third session of Second Vatican Council opens. This session focuses on matters like religious liberty, the relationship between Christianity and Judaism, how the Church should relate to the modern world, and similar topics.

Rather than trying to reach any specific conclusions on these topics, the goal is to arrive at some general statement of principles that everyone can agree on. Commissions later on will be given the task of developing ways to implement the principles.

There will be some controversy over the fact that revisions on the Catholic Church's position regarding religious freedom are set aside rather than voted on. Pope Paul VI promises, however, that they will be taken up and voted on in the fourth and final session.
