The complete Old and New Testament of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible are first published by Thomas Nelson and Sons. The RSV New Testament had first appeared in 1946.

For the past fifteen years, over ninety scholars have been working on revising the King James version of the Bible to make it more understandable to modern readers yet "preserve all that is best in the English Bible as it has been known and used through the years."

The National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, the sponsor of this translation effort, hosts a rally in Washington D.C. to celebrate. In the crowd are representatives of the all the churches affiliated with this project.

Over three million copies are being printed for the first run, but the very first copy of the RSV Bible is given to President Harry S. Truman by Luther Weigle, dean of the translation committee.

Rev. Dr. John Sutherland Bonnell says:

"It should mean that many thousands of persons, because of the newly awakened interest brought about by the publicity attendant upon the publication of this version, will begin to read the Bible.

If the Bible becomes more widely read we have every reason to expect an elevation of the moral standards within our nation.

If it should find its way anew into thousands of American homes, there may well be a resurgence of honesty, truthfulness and improved personal morality."

Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Sockman agrees:

"Every great revival of religion has stemmed from a reawakening of interest in Bible study. The time is ripe for a revival of interest in the Bible.

The air is full of voices giving us information and misinformation, but our spirits crave inspiration. We need to balance the bad news of the world with the good news of God which the Bible gives."
