In Jerusalem, Jewish terrorists assassinate Count Folke Bernadotte, the United Nations mediator for Palestine. The terrorists are members of the Zionist group Lehi, also sometimes known as the Stern Gang after its leader, Avraham Stern.

As United Nations Mediator in Palestine, Bernadotte has been the first official mediator in the history of the UN. His task was to find a way to stop the growing violence that arose following the announcement of the UN plan for partitioning Palestine.

Count Folke Bernadotte is assassinated because his peace proposals include the creation of an Arab Palestinian state, and the Lehi terrorists regard this as potentially disastrous for the future of Israel.

The Israeli government will disarm the Stern Gang because of this attack, but no one is prosecuted and no one is ever punished in any way.
