Pope Pius XII Allows Poland's Cardinal Hlond to Broadcast on Vatican Radio

Cardinal August Hlond

Although the Vatican and Pope Pius XII refuse to issue any direct criticism of Germany for invading Poland or even for the atrocities being committed against Catholic clergy in Poland, Polish Primate Cardinal August Hlond is allowed to use the Vatican radio to broadcast a message to Poles around the world.

Pope Pius XII would rather get Hlond back to Poland, but the General Government set up by the Germans won't allow it.

Cardinal Hlond's message states:

"Martyred Poland, you have fallen to violence while you fought for the sacred cause of freedom. ...

I cry to you, Poland, you are not beaten! By the will of God you will rise with glory, my beloved, my martyred Poland!"
