Pope Pius X issues the papal encyclical Motu Proprio Sacrorum antistitum which creates an Oath Against Modernism (Sacrorum Antistitum). All "clergy, pastors, confessors, preachers, religious superiors, and professors in philosophical-theological seminaries" are required to swear it.

The Oath Against Modernism will remain mandatory until it is rescinded in 1967 by Pope Paul VI.

Among the statements which clergy must swear to in the Oath Against Modernism are:

"I profess that God, the origin and end of all things, can be known with certainty by the natural light of reason from the created world. ...

[I] sincerely hold that the doctrine of faith was handed down to us from the apostles through the orthodox Fathers in exactly the same meaning and always in the same purport . ...

[I] declare that I am completely opposed to the error of the modernists who hold that there is nothing divine in sacred tradition. ..."
