Pope Pius IX surrenders to Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, king of Italy, when the latter enters Rome to set up his government in his new capital.

Rome and the territory of Latium are annexed to the Kingdom of Italy, a situation that will receive the approval of the Italian people in a plebiscite next year.

With this, the Papal States comes under the control of Italian troops and Italy is united into a single nation.
