Battle of Castelfidardo: A papal army, defending the existence of the Papal States, is thoroughly defeated by an Italian nationalist force known as the Piedmont Army. p>There are only about 10,000 soldiers in the papal army, mostly volunteers from around Europe. The Piedmont army numbers around 60,000 soldiers, and these superior numbers make the fight go quickly.

As a consequence of this battle, Pope Pius IX will be forced to surrender control over all papal territories except the "Patrimony of St Peter," which will eventually become the Vatican.
