Dred Scott dies in St. Louis, Missouri. Scott was the plaintiff in the landmark Supreme Court case of Dred Scott v. Sandford when the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that all descendants of Africans, whether enslaved or free, were not citizens of the United States and hence did not have the rights normally enjoyed by citizens — for example, being able to file suit in federal court.

This decision will be overruled by the ratification of the 14th Amendment to the U.S Constitution following the Civil War.
