Joseph Smith Jr. claims that the angel Moroni visits him for the first time on this night and tells him where to find a set of gold plates: buried in a hill in western New York, conveniently located close to where he currently lives.

According to Mormons, these plates will be the source of the Book of Mormon. He says they are written in a language he calls "reformed Egyptian" (it doesn't actually exist) and uses a magical stone to do the translation.

No one else ever actually sees the Golden Plates, much less is able to examine them and confirm what sort of writing might be on them. After Joseph Smith says he completes translating some of the text, he claims that he returns the plates to Moroni.
