Urban V is elected pope. Born William de Grimoard in Languedoc, France, he is a Benedictine monk who once taught theology. As pope, Urban V will be a strict disciplinarian who eschews the pomp and festival which other popes have enjoyed.

One important facet of his reign will be his efforts to move the papacy from Avignon back to Rome. Although by this time the Lateran palace is practically uninhabitable, Urban goes ahead anyway.

Unfortunately, political strife in Rome will force Urban to return to Avignon in 1370, and the papacy will again be under French domination.
