Saladin Breaks Camp at Ascalon, Moves Towards Ultimate Goal of Jerusalem

Saladin

Saladin breaks camp at Ascalon and moves his army towards Jerusalem. The conquest of Jerusalem has been Saladin's goal for several months now, but it's a heavily fortified city, so he has chosen to gradually take the surrounding territory and capture the smaller cities in the region, thus denying Jerusalem much-needed support.

Saladin will also take his time before actually launching his attack, preferring instead to scout out the city and region in order to ensure that his assault goes as well as it possibly can.

The defenses of Jerusalem will prove strong enough to keep even Saladin's large army at bay, despite the fact that there are so few left to defend the city's walls. Because of the small number of defenders, though, they won't be able to drive Saladin's army away and will be forced to surrender. Fortunately, Balian of Ibelin, leader of the Christian defenders, will be able to convince Saladin to agree to generous terms.
