History Topics

Richard I Lionheart of England is born. Richard will be one of the leaders of the Third Crusade as well as one of the most famous kings of England ever.

In addition to king of England, Richard will at different times be Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Anjou, Count of Maine, Count of Nantes, and Overlord of Brittany.

His nickname "Cœur de Lion," or Richard the Lionheart is acquired even before becoming king because of his renown as a fearless leader on the battlefield as well as a smart tactician. He's so good that he's commanding armies in the field when he's just 16 years old.

This is why he will be a key commander of the Third Crusade and becomes leader of the whole Crusade once Philip II Augustus of France leaves to return home. He will be unable to recapture Jerusalem, which of course is the primary goal of the Crusade, but he will achieve several important military victories against the Muslim leader Saladin, who is himself renown for his skills.

It's ironic that Richard I the Lionheart will become an iconic and beloved king of England, even centuries after his death, because he will be able to speak little or no English and ultimately spends very little time in England. At the same time, the English have to pay a heavy price — literally — not just for his military adventures in the Holy Land but also to pay a ransom when he's taken captive in Europe while returning home.
