Sabinian is elected pope. Not much is known about his life, but his election occurs during an especially turbulent time when Rome is being threatened by both invasion and plague.

Instead of following the example of his predecessor Gregory the Great and giving out free grain to the populace, Pope Sabinian decides to sell it at exorbitant prices. This will produce a huge profit for the papal treasury, but it also makes Pope Sabinian so unpopular that when he dies, his funeral procession will be forced to travel outside the city walls in order to reach St. Peter's Basilica safely.
