Robert Gumpertz, student body president at Villa Park High School, refuses to salute the flag because he is an agnostic and objects to the phrase "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

This is creating significant backlash from local conservatives, including especially the right-wing Citizens Committee of California.

Ruth Spencer, committee director, says:

"The unnecessary turmoil at Villa Park should have been stamped out long ago by administration officials so as not to impair the educational process of our students. ...

There is no place for revolutionaries in our school system."
