Friedrich Nietzsche enlists in an artillery regiment stationed in Naumburg, Germany. He will only remain in the military for a year because in March 1868 he receives a serious chest injury when thrown from his horse.

The injury proves to be too severe to remain on active military duty, and he will be discharged in October 1868.
