John Taylor, the third president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), is born in England. The only LDS Church president to be born outside of America, he will claim in 1886 to receive a revelation from God which reiterates the requirement that Mormons practice polygamy.

This divine revelation will come at a time when Mormons are experiencing significant persecution for their polygamous marriages. John Taylor himself is forced to go into hiding in 1885 in order to avoid persecution, and there is a very real threat that the entire Mormon church organization might be destroyed by the government.
