The Religious Society of Friends, better known as Quakers, submits a petition to the U.S. Congress asking for the abolition of slavery. The Quakers are one of the few Christian denominations which hold an abolitionist position at this time, condemning slavery in all its forms and publicly calling for an end to slavery in the United States.
