Boniface IX is elected pope. Born Piero Tomacelli in Naples, he has not been trained as a theologian or in the administration of the Curia. This makes him woefully unprepared for the tasks and challenges ahead of him.

As the second pope during the Great Western Schism, his failure to do much to end this rift will mean that most people will view his papacy as something of a failure. He will be popular in Rome, perhaps because his personality is more appealing than that of his predecessors, but that popularity will plummet when his authoritarian tendencies take hold and he abolishes Rome's republican government.
