King Louis IX of France begins to march his troops from Damietta to Cairo. His Crusaders, participating in the Seventh Crusade, captured Damietta in June. Louis is focusing his Crusade on Egypt rather than Syria because he hopes that this will provide a solid base from which to attack the rest of the Holy Land.

Sultan Ayub will offer Louis an exchange: Jerusalem for Damietta. Louis refuses, believing that he has a large military advantage over the Egyptians and that he will be able to achieve far more through fighting than through diplomacy. His next goal is Cairo, but he will have to wait until the floods drop down, allowing him to traverse the ground more easily.
