Hindu fundamentalist and nationalists groups protest when Pope John Paul II visits India during Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, and exchanges views about religion and interfaith relations.

Fundamentalists and nationalists complain that poor, illiterate, and lower caste Hindus are told by missionaries that they can get medical treatment from Christian hospitals and education from Christian schools — but only if they convert to Christianity.

Hindu leader B. P. Singhal tells reporters:

"We are against 'churchianity' trying to proselytize ignorant, unsuspecting poor people through bribes, fraud, and deceit."
