Construction on the Belzec extermination camp begins. This is one of the first of the Nazi extermination camps to be built for Aktion Reinhard (Operation Reinhard) and it's located in occupied Poland. Between 500,000 and 600,000 Jews will be murdered here — only one or two are known to have survived Belzec.
SS Brigadeführer Odilo Globocnik, SS and Police Leader of Lublin, was ordered by Heinrich Himmler last month to begin construction of Belzec. At the same time, he was also ordered to begin Germanizing the region. These two orders were closely connected: the process of Germanization presumed the extermination of undesirables.
It's to Belzec that SS Lt. Kurt Gerstein, a worker in the SS medical service, delivers a shipment of Zykon B and witnesses first-hand the horrors of the Holocaust. Gerstein will try to report what he learns to Catholic leaders, but they do nothing with his information.
