Peter Canisius is born in the Netherlands. Canisius will be the first German Jesuit and lead the Jesuit order in Germany. Peter Canisius is sometimes called the "Second Apostle of Germany" (St. Boniface was the first) because of his efforts to fight the Protestant Reformation.

It is believed that the restoration of the Catholic Church in Germany is due largely to the Jesuits and, therefore, to the work of Jesuit leader Canisius. Especially notable is his push to treat German reformers with greater respect and dignity. He rejects the personal attacks that become common, saying that "With words like these, we don't cure patients, we make them incurable."
