Jeffrey John, an openly gay man living a celibate life, is appointed bishop of Reading, England, a suffragan bishop in the Diocese of Oxford. This leads to a great deal of debate and controversy within both the Church of England and the Anglican Communion generally. Many object to John's appointment and some conservative Anglicans vow to split from the Anglican Communion completely if the appointment goes through.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams wants to avoid a schism over disagreements about whether gay men can be bishops so he forces Jeffrey John to turn down the post.
