Pope John Paul II travels to Romania, the first time that a pope has visited a predominantly Orthodox nation since the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches split in 1054.

Pope John Paul II was invited by Patriarch Teoctist of the Romanian Orthodox Church and on his arrival says,

"The second millennium of Christian history began with a painful wounding of the unity of the Church; the end of this millennium has seen a real commitment to restoring Christian unity."
