Pope John Paul II beatifies Ceferino Jiménez Malla, the first Roma (Gypsy) to receive such a distinction.

Also known as "El Pele," ("the Strong One", "the Brave One") Malla was a horse trader who was shot by a Republican firing squad in Spain during the Spanish Civil War after he tried to defend a Catholic priest.
