The Dalai Lama proclaims 6-year-old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima to be the 11th reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, the second most senior spiritual leader in Tibetan Buddhism.

In three days he will be taken into custody by the Chinese authorities and is never seen by the public or even his family afterwards. His whereabouts remain unknown, as is whether he's even alive or dead. The Chinese claim that Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was at risk of being "kidnapped by separatists" and "his security had been threatened."

Chinese authorities will name Gyancain Norbu as Panchen Lama, a decision which almost all Tibetan Buddhists reject.
