The Arab Federation, a political union between Iraq and Jordan with Iraq's King Faisal II as its head, officially comes into existence. This new political entity is designed to be a pro-western rival to the United Arab Republic being created out of Syria and Egypt.

Although the name implied a federal government, in reality it will be a confederation of states — and one that doesn't last very long. The Arab Federation comes to an end just six months after Iraq's King Faisal II is deposed in a coup.
