Joseph and Magda Goebbels commit suicide, just a few feet from the bodies of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. In his will Hitler had named Goebbels Reichskanzler (Chancellor of Germany).

His sole act as Reichskanzler is to send a letter to the commander of the Soviet forces in Berlin informing them of Hitler's death and offering to form a new Nazi government that will ally itself with the Soviets against he West. His offer is rejected.

Magda Goebbels has already killed their six children (Helga, Hildegard, Helmut, Holdine, Hedwig, Heidrun) by having them rendered unconscious with morphine injections then crushing cyanide ampules in their mouths.
