John Ashcroft, future Attorney General of the United States, is born in Chicago, Illinois.

In 2000 Ashcroft runs for the Senate in Missouri against Mel Carnahan. Even though Carnahan dies shortly before the election, he still beats John Ashcroft 51% to 49%.

This is the first time in the history of the United States that someone loses to a dead man in a U.S. Senate election.
