From the spa town of Vichy where a new French government had been established, Marshal Philippe Petain makes a radio broadcast in which he calls on the French people to follow him without question on a "path of honor and national interest" as he collaborates with Nazi Germany.

Petain says:

"It is a question for you Frenchmen, following me without questioning on the roads of honor and national interest.

If with rigid public discipline we are able successfully to conclude these negotiations, France can overcome her defeat and preserving in the world her rank as a European and colonial power."

For Petain, perserving France's rank and power are his most important goals. He and his Vichy administrators are willing to sacrifice anything and everything for this.
