Abbot Ildefons Herwegen, O.S.B., of Maria Laach Abbey, expresses approval for the Nazi control of Germany by declaring that

"the people and the government were again being united through the activity of the leader Adolf Hitler. ...

Blood, soil and fate are the appropriate expressions for the fundamental powers of the time."

The Maria Laach Abbey has been a center of right-wing Catholic thought even during the Weimar Republic, and many more here besides Herwegen welcome Nazi rule of Germany. Later, however, Abbot Ildefons Herwegen will end up going into hiding out of fear of Nazi repression.
