Mehmed VI (Vahideddin), the 36th and last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, dies in Sanremo, Italy.

The Turkish Grand National Assembly, which was created in 1920 in opposition to Mehmed VI agreeing to the dismantling of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, abolished the Sultanate on November 1, 1922. Mehmed was expelled from Istanbul and forced to live the rest of his life in exile.
