Cardinal Robert Bellarmine, one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation, is beatified by Pope Pius XI.

Bellarmine may be best known for his involvement with the suppression of Copernicanism and the Inquisition's case against Galileo. In 1616 Bellarmine made the official announcement that Copernicanism was declared a "false and erroneous" doctrine and told Galileo to refrain from teaching or promoting it.
