Hermann Rorschach signs a contract to publish a book explaining his inkblot interpretation technique.

Rorschach wants to include a set of his inkblot cards with the book, but because of the extra cost his publisher will only agree if he reduces the number from 15 down to 10. Those 10 will come to be considered the "standard set" of inkblots — not because there is anything especially good about them, but simply because of financial considerations by a book publisher.
