Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pope Pius XII, leaves for Munich to take up his post as Apostolic Nuncio to Bavaria. There is no separate nuncio for Prussia or Germany at this time, so Pacelli is effectively nuncio to the entire German Empire.

Shortly after arriving in Munich, Eugenio Pacelli conveys the desire of Pope Benedict XV to put an end to World War I. His overtures are greeted positively at first, but soon the German High Command becomes convinced that they can win the war militarily and so keep putting Pacelli off rather than answer him.
