At the Heiligenkreuz monastery near Vienna, Adolf Josef Lanz, now Father Georg, claims to have found a tombstone with a pagan image under the cloister flagstones.

Father Georg reports that this image depicts an "Aryan" noble stepping on an unidentified beast. He argues that this is an allegorical representation of the struggle between good and evil. Later, after adopting more extensive racist and nationalist beliefs, he argues that the "Aryan" is a blue-eyed, blond-haired force for good which does battle against the dark, evil races.

In a few years Father Georg will renounce his vows as a Cistercian monk and become an important figure among racists, anti-Semites, and German nationalists. Lanz creates Ordo Novi Templi (Order of the New Templars), a group which uses a swastika as its symbol. His magazine, Ostara, will be read avidly by Adolf Hitler and Dietrich Eckart, thus making him an important influence on the founding of the Nazi Party.
