Friedrich Nietzsche begins work on his book The Case of Wagner. Subtitled"A Musician's Problem", it is a critique of Richard Wagner and the first public expression of Nietzsche's break with the artist.

Friedrich Nietzsche had greatly admired Richard Wagner, but over time came to believe that Wagner had become too caught up in German nationalism, the Völkisch movement, and anti-Semitism.
