Swiss theologian Karl Barth is born in Basel, Switzerland.

One of the things Barth will be better known for is his position that a "natural theology," producing a rational defense of theism, simply isn't possible. According to Barth: "Belief cannot argue with unbelief, it can only preach to it."

Karl Barth will therefore be instrumental in the development of neo-orthodoxy, which represents a return to the scriptures as the basis for religion. He rejects the term for himself, however.
