German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche officially resigns his position at the University of Basel due to poor health. He had already been absent for quite some time, and his resignation comes as something of a relief to university officials.

Nietzsche receives a pension of 3,000 Swiss francs, two-thirds of his normal salary. This will be his primary source of income for the next ten years.
