The Sheikh-ul-Islam in Constantinople announces a jihad against the Russians.

This comes in response to the Russian invasion of the Ottoman Empire. The Russians make significant advances very quickly, in part because of having far more trained officers than the Ottomans, and in part through the sympathies of Christian minority populations in the Ottoman Empire.

Everywhere the Russians advance, massacres of Muslims follow. The Russians take the weapons discarded by fleeing Ottoman troops and distribute them among local Christians; they then turn on their Muslim neighbors and slaughter them.

Anyone who escapes the anti-Muslim pogroms flees to Istanbul, which is swarmed by over 250,000 refugees after only three months.
