Pope Pius IX Ends Jewish Emancipation in Tuscany Hot

After a personal plea from Pope Pius IX, Grand Duke of Tuscany Leopold II abolishes his own statute of 1848 eliminating all discrimination against the Jews.

Jews in Tuscany thus enjoyed full emancipation for only four years, then were returned to their former second-class status.
