As a result of an alleged revelation from God, Mormon leader Joseph Smith leads an expedition of 200 men, women, and children from Kirtland, Ohio, to Missouri.

The purpose of this expedition is to "redeem Zion," by which Smith means reclaiming the land and buildings taken by force by non-Mormon mobs in Jackson County, Missouri, in 1833.

Joseph Smith will abandon the effort after entering Missouri.
