The Protestant Union is created as a coalition of Protestant German states created for the defense of the rights, lands and person of each member. This is a response to the reestablishment of Catholicism in Donauwörth by Holy Roman Emperor and Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria.

Frederick IV of the Palatinate is designated the leader of the Protestant Union, but his tenure begins badly when several powerful Protestant German states refuse to join. Even worse, there is significant infighting among those who have joined.
