Birth of Mehmed III, future sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Mehmed III will be infamous even among the Ottoman sultans because he has nineteen of his brothers and half-brothers strangled to death in order to secure his position on the throne.

Then, once he has power, Mehmed III will leave the actual management of the Ottoman Empire in the hands of his assistants — at least until the Austro-Ottoman war in Hungary in 1596 when he takes command of the military himself.

Mehmed III turns out to be an awful commander, and the following year his doctors order that he not be allowed to go to war due to his ill health, "produced by excesses of eating and drinking."
