Great Siege of Malta: Ottoman Turks attacking the island of Malta begin an assault the Hospitaller fort of St. Elmo.
The knights and soldiers garrisoning Fort Saint Elmo will endure some of the worst fighting of the entire four month siege, in particular because the Turks occupy higher ground on Mount Sciberras from which they can bombard the fort with canon.
After a month, the defenders will no longer be able to hold out and the Ottoman Turks will overrun Fort St. Elmo. All of the knights defending the fort are killed and just nine Maltese defenders survive by swimming across the harbor to safety. Fort St. Elmo is itself reduced to rubble, but after the Siege of Malta is over the fort is rebuilt and strengthened.
