Diet of Worms: Charles V Signs Secret Pact With Pope Leo X to Declare on France

Source: Wikipedia

During the Diet of Worms, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V signs a secret pact with Pope Leo X to declare war on France. Emperor Charles V is only looking for a defensive alliance against the French, but Pope Leo X is determined that there be a full-scale war.

Leo is furious with King Francis I of France because he prevented Leo X from expanding the papal states in the way he wanted. It seems likely that a war between Charles and France would have broken out sooner or later regardless, but the efforts of Pope Leo X guarantee it — and probably ensure that the conflict lasts another three decades.
