Ottoman Sultan Beyazid II dies and is succeeded by his son, Selim I. Selim will become the first Ottoman caliph and will triple the size of the Ottoman empire, mostly in Asia and Africa, even though his reign lasts just nine years.

The largest single conquest occurs in 1516-1517 when Selim I takes control of the entire Mamluk Sultanate of Egypt, allowing him to adopt the title Caliph of Islam.
